An interview is compulsory for all candidates. Candidates who have qualified for the VUPET and those who have been exempted from it will have to appear for the interview at the department level. Candidates will be interviewed to assess their suitability for research in the area of their choice. The interview carries 100 marks. 

The selection and merit of the candidates will be decided on the basis of his/her performance at the interview. A list of selected candidates will be published along with the name of the guide and the area of their research. The result shall be communicated only to the successful candidates through their registered E-mail ID.

Structure of VUPET

There would be two papers. Paper I would be of 50 marks, 2 hours duration, objective type, aimed at assessing the general intelligence and aptitude of the candidate and Paper II would also be of 50 marks, objective &subjective and aimed at assessing the subject knowledge, the communication skills, research thinking of the candidate.

Paper I: It will have 50 questions of 1 mark each. The scope of this paper includes logical reasoning, numerical ability, Language skills, etc. This paper is common for students of all faculties. Minimum passing is 50% for all candidates.

Paper II: This paper is subject-specific. It will be 40% objective multiple choice and 60% subjective. The aim is to check the subject knowledge, research thinking, communication skills, etc.

The passing percentage for this paper is 50% for all candidates.

VUPET is a qualifying examination. Candidates who score more than 50% marks in both papers are eligible to appear for an interview twice. If they fail to clear the interview in two attempts they will have to appear again appear for the VUPET.

The result shall be communicated only to the successful candidates through their registered E-mail ID.

Exemption From VUPET

The candidates fulfilling any one of the following criteria will be exempted from VUPET.


  • Qualified NET of the government departments like UGC/CSIR/DBT/DST/ICMR/ICAR etc or SET or qualified GATE with a valid score. ( to be decided by BUTR)
  • M.Phil degree of not less than two years duration with minimum 16 credits of course work and a dissertation in relevant subject from a recognized University
  • Minimum 05 years of experience as an approved teacher in any University
  • Submission of the admission form and Interview is mandatory for all candidates including the candidates exempted from VUPET

Ph.D Admission Process

Applications are invited from all the eligible candidates for Ph.D. programme for AY 2021 – 22. Candidates should check the research interests/domains of available guides before applying for admission. The admissions shall be made based on Vishwakarma University Ph.D. Entrance Test (VUPET) Examination followed by Interview.

Eligibility Criteria 

  • Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
  • A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

  • Candidates should check the eligibility mentioned above before applying for Ph.D. admission.
  • Check the research interests/domains of available guides.
  • Pay Ph.D. admission form fee Rs. 6000/- (Rs.4000 for reserve category candidates). The Ph.D. admission form fee can be pay through RTGS/IMPS/NEFT modes.

Note: Students qualifying Master's Degree in 2021 can apply for Ph.D. admission. Students need to submit the result on or before Nov 28, 2021, in person or through the confidential document from the Self-Declaration form (applicable to student qualifying Master's Degree in 2021 and result is yet awaited)
