National Mathematics Day is celebrated on 22nd December every year all over India to mark the birth anniversary of legendary mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. The Department of Engineering Sciences under the Faculty of Science and Technology had organized National Mathematics Day on Friday, 15th Dec 2023 to pay tribute to Ramanujan and his work. The event was planned for the F.Y.B.Tech. students of our University and the specific date was chosen being it the last day of instructions as per the academic calendar. The theme for the event was “Mathematics for Everyone”. We had invited the students from other institutions under BRACT as well for the event.
As a part of the celebration, we conducted the following activities.
We intended to involve all the students/faculties in the event through these activities in alignment to our theme-`Mathematics for Everyone’. We feel that these activities boosted interest in Mathematics and also the celebration proved to be a stress buster for the students at the end of a hectic semester and made them afresh to face the following end semester examinations.
Participation of all F.Y.B.Tech. students of our University was kept mandatory as the students were graded for their third project based CIE as per the participation and performance in the celebration of National Mathematics Day. It was mandatory for them to participate in poster/model making competition, Sudoku competition and attend the online guest lectures from their respective classrooms. All the students participated enthusiastically in the event. One student from T.Y.B.Sc. also participated in the Sudoku competition. More than 400 students participated in the celebration.
We gave medals and e-certificates to the winners of poster making completion, Sudoku solving competition. We also gave consolation prizes to the students in the poster making competition and a token of appreciation to the single group in the 3D model making competition. The posters and model were evaluated by external evaluators from reputed institutes. The Prize distribution was done at the hands of Honorable Vice-president Dr. W. N. Gade, Dean Dr. Nitin Satpute and Associate Dean Prof. Sanjesh Pawale.
Mathematics being an important subject in all sciences and especially in engineering, we think that these activities will prove to be beneficial for the students and will help to remove the fear of mathematics from their minds.
We got valuable guidance from our Dean, Associate Dean, Head of the Department and enormous support from all the faculty colleagues in conducting the program. Student volunteers proved to be a strong pillar in the whole event, right from decoration, displaying posters, conduction of the inauguration and valedictory programs, Sudoku competition and lending support in technical issues as well.
Overall, we feel the event was successful and at the end all the stakeholders were satisfied.
