Overview

The objective of the M.A. programmes in Prakrit and Jain Studies is to provide students with a systematic understanding of the Prakrit language and Jain philosophy at the foundational and advanced levels respectively. Through these programmes, students are introduced to the structure, historical development, and literary tradition of the Prakrit language, along with Jain Āgamic literature, core philosophical concepts, ethical values, monastic traditions, contemporary discourses, and research methodologies.

The M.A. in Prakrit and Jain Studies programme places special emphasis on advanced and in-depth study. It covers profound concepts of Jain philosophy, Āgamic and post-Āgamic literature, comparative philosophy, applied Jain studies, and the development of a research-oriented perspective. This programme equips students with the ability for independent thinking, critical analysis, and meaningful contribution to academic and research fields.

programmes emphasize a strong theoretical foundation combined with practical and research-oriented approaches, enabling students to effectively understand and apply the principles of Prakrit language and Jain philosophy in academic, social, ethical, and cultural contexts.


 
Outcome On successful completion of the M.A. in Prakrit and Jain Studies programme at VU the student will be able to :
1 Students will acquire general and practical knowledge of the Prakrit language and Jain religion and philosophy
2 Students will develop a fundamental linguistic understanding of Sanskrit and Prakrit languages.
3 Students will gain basic knowledge of linguistic theories.
4 Students will develop the ability to understand and apply linguistic concepts.
5 Students’ communication skills—speaking, writing, and comprehension—will be enhanced.
6 Students will develop leadership qualities.
7 Students’ critical thinking, analytical, and reasoning abilities will be strengthened.
8 Students will develop an appreciation for understanding and accepting diverse cultures.
9 Students will cultivate a sense of belonging, unity, and equanimity.
10 Students will develop an understanding of accurate, refined, and ethical use of language.


  • This is a specialized Bachelor’s programme with a strong focus on the holistic development of students.
  • The curriculum includes the study of the Prakrit language, Jain philosophy, Āgamic literature, scripts, and related elective subjects.
  • Courses related to ancient Prakrit language skill enhancement and capacity building are incorporated into the curriculum.
  • The academic structure strengthens students’ linguistic proficiency, critical thinking, and research capabilities.
  • The programme offers learning opportunities aligned with changing technological, social, cultural, and economic environments.
  • A variety of teaching–learning methods are employed, such as lectures, text reading, discussions, seminars, and project work.
  • Students are provided with the option to choose university-level and department-level minor electives and open elective courses.

This programme provides a strong foundation for higher education, research, teaching, translation, writing, and careers in cultural fields.

प्राकृत एवं जैन स्टडीज का यह पाठ्यक्रम मेरे लिए केवल एक शैक्षणिक अध्ययन नहीं, बल्कि आत्मिक और बौद्धिक समृद्धि की यात्रा रहा है । इस पाठ्यक्रम के माध्यम से मुझे प्राकृत भाषा, जैन दर्शन एवं आगमिक साहित्य का गहन और सार्थक ज्ञान प्राप्त हुआ। अनुभवी एवं मार्गदर्शक प्राध्यापकों का सान्निध्य, सुव्यवस्थित पाठ्यक्रम तथा शोध-उन्मुख अध्ययन पद्धति ने मेरी शैक्षणिक क्षमता, विश्लेषण शक्ति एवं चिंतन को नई दिशा दी है ।

Choosing to study Prakrit and Jain Studies has been one of the best decisions and a true milestone in my life. This course made it possible for me to gain a deep and authentic understanding of Jainism from its very origins. The well-structured syllabus and excellent teaching methods created a strong interest and curiosity in learning. For Reserved Category Students – Caste Certificate, Caste Validity, and Non-Creamy Layer Certificate, are additionally required (over and above listed documents).

Submit all/Pending documents as early as possible to complete the admission process. For the last date of submission of documents, contact the university Admissions Office/ Student’s sections.



If admission (provisional / confirmed) is cancelled before 31st August, 2026 will be deducted and the balance amount will be refunded.

If admission (provisional / confirmed) is cancelled after 31st August, 2026, then no paid fees will be refunded.

Note: Students / Candidate is expected to be in touch with Counselling and Admissions Office, VU, to seek update on last date of admission.

If refund is applicable, then the applicable amount (refund) will be disbursed/ credited to the candidate’s/ parent’s bank A/c through RTGS/NEFT, as per A/c details indicated by the candidate within 15 working days from the date of cancellation of admission.

  • Hostel Charges : Rs. 1,25,000/- to Rs. 1,45,000/- depending upon seat type.
  • It includes a Mess (Breakfast + Dinner) and a Refundable Deposit of Rs. 5,000/-.
