Vishwakarma University in coordination with Lions club donated two Smart Canes named NavCane to visually impaired people at Poona Blind School on Wednesday, 3rd October 2018. NavCane is an electronic navigation aid designed to assist visually impaired people. The PhD scholars, Mrs Vidula Meshram and Mr Vishal Meshram, developed the product under the guidance of Prof. Kailas Patil at IoT Research Lab of Vishwakarma University, Kondhwa, Pune.
NavCane helps visually impaired people the to detect obstacles like scaffoldings which rise above waist level. Upon detection of the obstruction, it provides audio feedback to its users via headphones. Along with it, NavCane supports object and colour recognition in an indoor environment. This facility is delivered using the RFID reader. The objects of regular use and colours of clothes can be preconfigured using RFID tags which are read by the reader when brought near it. Further, a unique facility provided by NavCane is the panic button. In case of emergency, a visually impaired person can press this panic button. On press of this button, a message is sent to caretakers or relatives of a visually impaired person. This facility is provided using GSM technology. The NavCane allows configuring of mobile numbers of the caretakers or relatives of the user.
