Vishwakarma University’s Department of Statistics, under the Faculty of Science and Technology successfully organized SANKHYAKRITI, a National level competition for B.Sc. Statistics students on 31 January 2020 at its Kondhwa Campus.
The event comprising of various competitions received an enthusiastic response from more than 162 participants from across the country. In the words of Prof.(Dr) Nazia Wahid, Head, Department of Statistics, Sankhyakriti helped to create awareness about the importance of Statistics among the student community. Prof.(Dr) Wasudeo Gade, Vice President VU, informed all that VU is now a member of National Institution for Quality and Reliability (NIQR), Headquarters at Chennai and Tamil Nadu.
A total of 29 teams participated in the project competition for the third year, 17 teams came up with innovative ideas in the poster competition for the second year and 21 teams fought it out for the first year quiz competition.
Praising the meticulously planned event, the Chief Guest for the program Mr. Alok Kumar (Joint Director, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, National Statistical Office (Field Operations Division, Regional Office, Pune) enlisted three steps for success-risk-taking, data analysis and decision making. Mr. Kumar underscored the fact that fortune is not a dependable factor and one should “try and be different from others.”
Addressing in his turn, the Guest of Honor Dr. Pulak Guhathakurta (Scientist-F, India Meteorological Department, Pune) took all on a brief and interesting tour of the history of Indian statistics, the dynamics of weather forecasting and interpreting climate data for a safe future among other topics such as rainfall prediction and draught analysis. Dr. Pulak also urged the students to be proud of what they were studying as they would make statistics an integral part of their daily life.
An expert session was conducted towards the end of the event by industry stalwart Ms. Preeti Pandhu, Founder and Director of Data Science Lab, who has trained more than 3000 professionals and students across the country, on how data science is related to everyday life. Another expert, Mr. Mahesh Chorghade-senior statistics officer, NSO RO Pune was felicitated on this occasion. SIES College , Science and Commerce, Nerul, Mumbai bagged the first place in the Project Competition, K.J Somaiya College, Mumbai was judged the best in the Poster Competition and Modern College, Pune stood first in the Quiz Competition.
