The Music Department, VU had organized guest sessions by Prof.Karl Lutchmayer, UK on "Western Music" for the B.A. Hos.Music FY students from 10th-12th September, 2019 at the VU Campus.
Prof. Karl Lutchmayer is equally renowned as a concert pianist and a lecturer. A Steinway Artist, Prof. Karl Lutchmayer performs across the globe, and has worked with conductors including Lorin Maazel and Sir Andrew Davis, and performed at all the major London concert halls. He has broadcast on BBC Radio 3, All India Radio and Classic FM, and is a regular chamber performer. A passionate advocate of contemporary music, Prof. Lutchmayer has also given over 90 world premieres and had many works written especially for him. In recent years, he has focused much of his time and attention on nurturing the burgeoning Western Classical music scene in India. It was for this work that he was awarded the Bharat Gaurav (Pride of India) Lifetime achievement award in 2015.
Prof. Lutchmayer introduced the music students to the fundamental elements of Western Music Theory & Practical.The sessions were very informative as it was the first exposure to Western music for many students. Prof. Lutchmayer introduced students to the History and evolution of Western Music from the documented origins of the music. He illustrated the staff notation system and various concepts like harmony, symphony, orchestration, time & melody signatures, syncopation etc. He introduced students to Jazz music. He also conducted some guided listening sessions on the compositions of famous composers like Mozart, Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven etc.
At the end of the music sessions, JMC Department conducted an interview of Prof. Lutchmayer as a part of project for JMC students. He was interviewed by Prof.Ruchira Kedar, HoD, Music Faculty as well as by JMC students on his career in music as well as academics.
